Microsoft Gold-level ISV partner MetaVis Technologies has released a solution enabling customers to migrate their data from the Google Apps cloud to Microsoft SharePoint or the Microsoft Office 365 SaaS suite. We’ve heard plenty of ISVs and cloud integrators offering services that enable users to go the other direction, but MetaVis Migrator for Google Apps is one of a very small range of Google-to-Microsoft solutions.

From the press release, here’s MetaVis’ own list of features in its new solution:

  •  Migrate Google documents, collections, version histories, comments and metadata to SharePoint and Office 365
  • Convert native Google documents (documents, presentations, tables) from the Google format to the Google format to Microsoft Office equivalent, txt, pdf, CSV, etc. and upload to SharePoint Preserve document created and modified dates
  • Map users and permissions when copying content from Google Documents to SharePoint
  • Filter and map file owner attribute
In a prepared statement, MetaVis CEO and co-founder Steve Pogrebivsky lays out the value proposition for the new tool:
”The cloud is quickly becoming the content platform for business and companies need an effective way to move information into or out of one Cloud platform to another. MetaVis Migrator for Google provides an easy way for companies to move information between Google and Office 365 SharePoint. Unlike other solutions, our MetaVis migration products are agentless making them ideally suited for migrating to and from cloud environments.”
At the risk of sounding jaded, this seems more like a contribution to Microsoft’s propaganda efforts than anything: Steve Ballmer loves to crow about Microsoft Office 365′s momentum in the channel and with customers. Being able to point to a Microsoft ISV that put out a Google Apps escape hatch is only going to reinforce that storyline.

The key player in this space in MigrationWiz. That’s why there is only a small range of Google-to-Microsoft solutions.

Bob,

Thanks for taking the time to comment. Are you asociated with MigrationWiz?

1. Your link to thier web site is wrong. http://www.metavistech.com

2. It looks like they only do the docs, whatabout a full migration tool moving email, calendar, contacts, security, and docs?

Old news I’m afraid. We have had a migration suite that includes the facility to go in that direction for some time. I would also question the comment regarding Migration Wiz. We are moving around 20,000 mailboxes, docs etc, a week and have been doing so for some time. All the large migrations including UTAH and Wyoming States have been done using our CloudMigrator tm. Ours is the only tool that will allow customers to go in each and every conceivable direction.

      Thanks Joe
Let me throw another stat at you! An indicator for us regarding cloud adoption rates for mail and collaboration particularly in the US……… we and our US partners have moved more people to the cloud in the last 6 months than in the previous 18. By cloud we mean public cloud.

        Joe Panettieri:

Steve, Impressive stat. Without getting into exact margins, can you say if those migrations have been profitable? Also, feel free to email me directly if/when you have more migration news to share.
