OpenStack: Piston Cloud Partners with RightScale, Puppet Labs, Opscode
Piston Cloud, the very first enterprise OpenStack company, is bolstering its Piston Enterprise OS (pentOS) private cloud operating system by way of partnerships with RightScale, Puppet Labs and Opscode for cloud management, VM management and infrastructure automation, respectively.
The Piston Enterprise OS value proposition hinges around leveraging the up-and-coming open source platform OpenStack as an enterprise-grade private cloud platform, using its purportedly unique, so-called Null-Tier Architecture to combine storage, compute and networking on every node. And true to the OpenStack design philosophy, Piston says its operating system is hardware vendor-agnostic.
TalkinCloud has discussed the RightScale myCloud private and hybrid cloud management solution at length, and given the latter’s very public support for OpenStack, it’s no wonder the two ended up in bed together. A big part of RightScale’s value proposition for pentOS customers is in “providing seamless failover options and portability capability from private to public clouds,” according to the press release.
Similarly, Puppet Labs has made a name for itself and its Puppet Forge services provision, configuration management and automation tools by way of partnerships with Eucalyptus and Nimbula — and now it’s enabling administrators and service providers to gain the same functionality for clouds running atop pentOS infrastructure.
On that note, fellow Nimbula partner Opscode and its Opscode Chef solution allows for “private cloud users to build fully automated VM clusters in a reliable and secure environment,” in Piston’s own words. The goal is to allow pentOS customers to easily scale infrastructure based on need.
Piston’s status as an enterprise OpenStack company would make it worth our notice all on its own. The fact that relatively well-established open source/private cloud vendors consider pentOS worthwhile just confirms that notion. Stay tuned to TalkinCloud for more.
