Service provider SunGard Availability Services has long been rumbling about the impending launch of their managed infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) offering. But SunGard Enterprise Cloud Services has finally seen official release, giving customers and the reseller partners that serve them managed compute and storage resources.
SunGard had been rolling out their enterprise cloud services on a customer-by-customer basis as early as August 2010, when Cycle30 signed up. And SunGard’s press release on the official, public launch of their IaaS offering indicates that Cycle30 is happy with their early jump onto the bandwagon thanks to the “millions” they’ve saved.
The 99.95% SLA that backs SunGard Enterprise Cloud Services supports their VM infrastructure and hardware. Technology-wise, their cloud is built on VMware, Cisco, and EMC technology in their data centers. Sounds like a classic Vblock engagement.
What’s more is that SunGard is promoting their portfolio of traditional managed services and hosting to cloud customers, offering the option of moving only certain applications into the cloud and leaving the others as they are. It’s potentially a way for enterprises to make an MSP-aided move to the cloud at their own pace. And to that end, SunGard is also providing cloud migration advisory services.
While plenty of managed service providers are making the transition to cloud service provider, it’s still fairly uncommon for a company to build and host their own cloud solutions without partnering with a larger platform provider. SunGard is looking to buck that trend, and we’ll be keeping a close eye on them going forward.
