Vyatta is extending its routing, network security and content inspection vision to the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud and Red Hat KVM hypervisor with the launch of Vyatta Network OS 6.3.

The idea, according to Vyatta’s press release, is to enable cloud service providers to “maintain compliance within KVM-based environments and the Amazon public cloud” within IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS networks. The Amazon and Red Hat custom packages join Vyatta’s existing VMware ESX and Citrix XenServer support, which Vyatta said accounts for “all of the leading hypervisor offerings available in today’s market.”

Tom McCafferty, vice president of marketing at Vyatta, had this to say in a prepared statement:

“The complete, enterprise-class feature set of Vyatta Network OS, combined with the expanding platform and driver support, reinforces Vyatta’s position as the industry leader in software networking. With nearly 1 million downloads of Vyatta Network OS, the latest 6.3 release showcases the power of on-demand networking as the best way to address the connectivity and security needs of next-gen networking architectures for the enterprise.”

And here are some bullet-pointed new features Vyatta Network OS 6.3 brings to the table for cloud providers, as per that same press release:

  • IPSec VPN and OpenVPN enhancements
  • Upgraded Snort intrusion prevention system (IPS) from SourceFire
  • Image upgrade improvements
  • New CLI commands to simplify file management
  • New web-based management interface

Finally, Vyatta is hyping the inclusion of “integrated 10GbE Broadcom drivers, delivering driver-level I/O optimization for physical and virtual hardware,” expanding on its existing Intel driver support.

Vyatta Network OS 6.3 is available Aug. 23, 2011, with the AWS and Red Hat KVMs slated for release Sept. 15, 2011.

Thus far in 2011, Vyatta has made waves by appointing a new VP of Sales and partnering up with Cloud.com. Stay tuned to TalkinCloud for more updates.
